UK rockers GENTLEMAN'S PISTOLS have just released their sophomore LP, ‘At Her Majesty's Pleasure’ today, June 21st, 2011 via Rise Above Records/Metal Blade Records. The album (“a labor of love, not to mention copious late nights, equipment malfunctions and frayed nerves”) was produced by the band's singer & guitarist James Atkinson at Mutiny Studios in Bradford, UK: “It wasn’t easy,” admits Atkinson. “The studio was so cold that the guitars kept falling out of tune between takes and most of the album was recorded while the band were wearing gloves and coats! … This took a little longer than first imagined,” he continues, “I was fully expecting a Brian Wilson style meltdown at one point but luckily managed to get it finished and remain happy with the outcome.” You can buy this labor of love here (Metal Blade), among other places, and find out more about the gentlemen themselves here (official blog).
“If ‘At Her Majesty's Pleasure’ had been released in 1975,” reads the press release, “it would be safe to call it proto-metal; GENTLEMAN'S PISTOLS belong to that rare grouping of acts who have preserved classic 1970's rock/metal and transported it to the year 2011 with a sledge hammer delivery. Imagine the rawness of Sir Lord Baltimore and the heavy groove of FREE merged with classic heavy rock-riffing and a convincingly energetic, near punk-rock delivery and you’re getting close to what is unleashed in the music of GENTLEMAN’S PISTOLS.”
Drawing inspiration from the classic glam bands like SLADE and SWEET and 70's bands such as DEEP PURPLE and CAPTAIN BEYOND, GENTLEMAN'S PISTOLS was formed in 2003 by singer & guitarist James Atkinson (ex-VOORHEES), bassist Douglas McLaughlan and drummer Simon Mawson, who was replaced by Adam Clarke a year later. Before they recorded a 7'” single ‘Just A Fraction’ in 2006 for the Art Goes Pop label, the band added second guitarist, Chris Rogers, to the lineup. Another 7” single, ‘The Lady’, was released through Rise Above Record that same year. The group's self-titled debut full-length came out in 2007 via the same label. Bill Steer (of FIREBIRD, CARCASS, ex-NAPALM DEATH fame), recently joined the GENT’S on lead guitar, replacing former six stringer Chris Rogers.
